After leaving England at a steady 23c with blue skies, bound for Iceland one could notice the change in the temperature. Cooler due to the chill factor. To think, the day before I had been sitting fishing on a lake with just a t-shirt on. The bonus of being in Iceland was the calm atmosphere, the pure and clear air and the time to reflect about the things that really matter in your life, without someone trying to invade your space. The ever-present sight of industrial development lines the route to Reykjavik, the road that leads to the city is being extended to four lanes, and this is a good system, as it will prevent the many fatalities on this route. With the exit of the American Air Force Base near the airport the Icelandic Parliament are considering turning the base into a university campus which is a great idea. It will give opportunity to the every increasing influx of underprivileged people.
Iceland seems to be experiencing financial stability, the building industry is on the up with the help of foreign workers. On reaching the hotel ‘the Grand Hotel' which is one of the best in Reykjavik. This is home to the many conferences, meetings and presentations of the most prestigious companies in Iceland.
I made my way to my room which is in the old part of the hotel where I have spent many years, to my surprise the hotel has extended to a multi story complex with some very comfortable rooms. The restaurant in the hotel is supported by a excellent menu and with it's warm surroundings and soft music makes it an ideal place to take a friend.
The training started with the children, as usual it was a good turnout, ever enthusiastic the children were ready to receive instruction. Full of of energy the children went through the disciplines that included the three K's, (Kihon, Kata, Kumite) They all seemed to have a great time on this the first of three days. The Adults training was for four days, which consisted of the IOGKF grading curriculum. There were also 15 candidates to attempt their grading exam so at the end of the training everyone was very tired. That evening we celebrated the success of the candidates that were successful in their attempt, with a wonderful B.B.Q.
My next Gasshuku in Iceland will be in November, the date to be confirmed, everyone will be welcome.
My special thanks to Gretar Örn Halldórsson, Reinharð Reinharðsson and Bryndís Valbjarnardóttir, for their efforts in making this trip a great success.
