Children's Camping Trip August 2008

Winchester was our destination, to be precise Folly Farm near Crawley where Richard and Rosemary Pickup the proprietor's have taken care of us and supplied our every need for several years now. The campsite is surrounded by fields and an abundance of trees, which allowed the group of 17 children to enjoy nature and the countryside in safety.

The campsite can boast a farm with variety of animals which the children were able to feed and become acquainted with. Most of the children are bought up in the inner city so for them this was a special treat.

The trip lasted for 3 days, the children had to erect their own tents with supervision which helped to build team work, every child had their chores and responsibilities, which helped build self-confidence and motivation. There were children from different backgrounds and environments, but all seemed to be interacting.

As to training I introduced them to knife defence, because of the ever growing concern about knife attacks within our society, it will help them to buy time and maybe save their life. I had them in pairs with hand protectors trying out an array of sparring techniques which they seemed to enjoy.

Also they were able to participate in Rugby skills which were provided by my bother Jimmy who is a professional coach, they also had a lesson in history with a visit to Winchester Cathedral and the Intec – hands on Science Centre.

My special thanks to Nigel Collins for his dedication and administration skills, without his effort the whole event would not happen, and to all the parents and friends for their hard work in helping keeping the event running smoothly.
