Friday night I traveled by Virgin Train to Carlisle quite a good service and certainly beats the drive! On reaching the station I boarded a taxi to Sensei Dan's Dojo, which is a very large complex and accommodates a wide variety of Performing Arts, including four dance studios, 3 Martial Arts Schools, and a number of music studios, and wonderful vegetarian restaurant.
After feeling quite fatigued from travel, we made our way to one of Sensei Dan's houses to send the Weekend in close proximity to the dojo, after a light supper it was off to bed.
On reaching the Dojo in the morning I could hear the many sounds from the different studios and this suggested lots of energy would be present. On entering the Dojo to my surprise there were only 10 people lined up for training, later Sensei Dan explained that this was a weekend only for the grading candidates.
As to the training it would be 8 hours of the IOGKF grading syllabus and 2 hours for the grading, of which I explained to candidates that were successful, that now you are true beginners.
Sensei Dan Russell has been training with me for 36 years,I met him while I was teaching in Cambridge University in 1970. He graduated with a Masters Degree in Anthropology, and went to Israel to study Hebrew at the University, and graduated with a degree in Hebrew. He invited me to teach there in1972, from then on I have taught each year in Israel.
I surprised him with the invitation to attempt his 4th Dan examination, and I am pleased to award him 4th Dan for his efforts and determination and many years of loyalty.
Congratulation D.F.S Russell M.A. R.S.M. and the Regiment
Sensei George Andrews
